Fire engine overturns on vehicles, multiple injuries sustained

CONSTANTIA KLOOF – A fire engine overturns with multiple vehicles involved, investigations underway.

Multiple injuries were sustained when a fire engine overturned and caused an accident involving four other vehicles earlier today, 31 January.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring released a report which claimed that eight people were injured when the fire engine overturned on the corner of Wilgerood and Christiaan De Wet roads in Constantia Kloof.

“ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene and found that a large fire-fighting vehicle lay on its side in the middle of the road against one light motor vehicle. One light motor vehicle was found partially crushed beneath the fire vehicle. Upon closer inspection, paramedics found several firefighters and members of the public walking around on the scene,” the report stated.

It further read that traffic was heavily affected due to the incident and the cause of the collision was not yet known.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) media liaison, Nana Radebe, who was at the scene, confirmed the incident and said there were nine patients who sustained injuries, four of whom were firefighters. Out of the nine patients, six sustained minor injuries while three were in a serious but stable condition.

Radebe stated that interviews with the firefighters and the public would be conducted and an investigation would be launched into the cause of the incident.
She added that the route would be partially open until the fire engine is removed.

Metro police chief superintendent, Wayne Minnaar said it would not take long to remove the truck. He added that standard procedures would be followed when investigating the incident, and the persons responsible would be charged with reckless and negligent driving.
