Peaceful protest at Unisa’s Florida Campus

Unisa strike

The entrances of University of South Africa’s (Unisa) Florida Campus were a sea of red as National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) members picketed just outside the gates. At one entrance, there were embers ablaze from a braai-wood fire.

The picketers were Unisa staff members who are demanding a 10 per cent salary hike after negotiations with the university fell through last year. The strike is protected by the CCMA for the next two days and a Nehawu shop steward, who did not want to be named, said they will not rest until their demands are met.

“We have not been in negotiations since last year and the salary increase is just one of our numerous demands. The management offered us a 4,5 per cent increase from their initial 6 per cent offer, and refuses to budge while we have come down from 14 per cent to 10 per cent. Our strike will be peaceful and nobody will be barred from entering the university campus,” he said.
