Paddler ready for Dusi

FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon just less than a month away

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s (FLCC) top paddler, Shaun Maphanga, participated in the Sports4Life Dusi training race at Wemmer Pan in the South of Johannesburg during the weekend of 21 and 22 January.

The race included a marathon 21-kilometre distance where paddlers practiced essential skills to save time – skills such as streamlining how they jump out of their canoes, pick them up and run with them for a short distance, and then practice getting back on the water smoothly.

Maphanga, who is also FLCC’s grounds manager, finished in third place in 1h49m, which leaves him confident for the FNB Dusi race which takes place from 16 to 18 February, and extends from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

South Africa will also be hosting the ICF World Marathon Championships in Pietermaritzburg in September, increasing the focus on and interest in marathon training and portaging practice for all South African paddlers who plan to participate in the major international event.
