Donations of love

JOBURG – Charity Begins with Me aims to spread love on Valentine's Day with the help of the community.

Charity Begins with Me wants to start the year off by collecting a little bit of love in time for Valentine’s Day.

Founder Stephan Ferreira, confirmed the charity will be collecting slabs of chocolate and jars of Purity from now until 13 February.

“The chocolates will be distributed to old-age homes in the area, depending on how many we are able to collect. Our first drop-off will be the Florama Old Age Home in Roodepoort and, if we have enough, we will add a second and third old-age home to the list,” Ferreira said.

“Every time we go to visit, they ask us for treats and what is more appropriate than chocolate on Valentine’s Day?”

Each chocolate slab will be individually gift wrapped and handed out with a Valentine’s Day card. Children from Vuleka St Michael’s in Weltevreden Park and from Edufun4Kids in Ruimsig will be making the cards. “We also have young friends in Gipsy Pipsy Tinker School in Melville helping us with this project.”

Vice principal of EduFun4Kids, Mercia Cruickshank said their preschool had been involved in making cards for Ferreira’s drives before and is always willing to help out. All the children of the school get involved and have collectively created 181 Valentine’s Day cards. The preschool will also be donating a small bag of rusks to be enjoyed with each card.

The jars of Purity will be delivered to the Door of Hope which looks after abandoned babies. “They have baby houses in Glenvista and Berea and do the most amazing work,” he said.

“[Tthe babies] might be a little too young for chocolate but they definitely deserve a little love as well. Any size or flavour Purity is most welcome. This will be boxed and wrapped for delivery on Valentine’s Day as well.”

Charity Begins with Me aims to collect 400 slabs of chocolate and 300 jars of Purity. Currently, the charity has already collected 111 chocolate slabs and 110 jars.
