New blood at Parkies

New teachers out to make a difference

The beginning of the school year has not only brought new learners for Florida Park High School, but new teachers too.

Fresh out of university is Shayna Michel who will be teaching Natural Sciences and Creative Arts to Grade 8 learners. She is no stranger to the school as her mother was a learner there, and her grandmother worked at the school.

“It wasn’t a shock to the system because I have history at the school. I want a family one day and a career in teaching will allow me that. I also want to shape the young minds of learners who will then go out into the world and make a positive impact,” said Shayna.

Helen Deroucakis returns to the school after seven years. She will be teaching English to Grade 10 and 12 learners. “I love it here and that’s why I’m back. This school is like one big, noisy family,” she said.

Carla Grobler will be teaching Afrikaans to Grade 8 and 10 learners. She has been finding her feet at the school as the initial experience is a bit emotional. “If my learners all pass at the end of the academic year, then I will be happy because it’ll mean I’m on the right path,” she said.

Samantha Trent will be teaching Consumer Studies to Grade 10 to 12 learners. She previously taught at a private school but wanted experience in a mainstream school. “Parkies is bigger and has bigger classes, which is what I wanted. So far, things have gone well, but it takes some time getting used to everything. My goal for this year is to have a 100% pass rate in my subject,” she said.

Ameena Suliman, who is also fresh out of university, is excited about her first teaching position. She will be teaching English to Grade 8 and 10 learners. “I am so happy at the way the school welcomed me so warmly, especially during my transition from academics,” she said.
