Elderly woman nearly robbed by screwdriver wielding suspects

One suspect caught.

Yesterday (5 January) at about 12.45pm an elderly woman walking with two small children on Trezona Avenue, fell prey to an attempted robbery.

One of the attackers was wielding a screwdriver. They attempted to rob her of her cellphone and wallet, but failed. The suspects then fled into a veld. Members of West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) searched the veld and found the two suspects hiding among a group of illegal miners. The two men tried to flee but one was caught on Proot Street.

WSRNW then called the police but when they arrived they refused to arrest the suspect who was found to be an illegal immigrant. A 45-minute-long argument ensued with the police members who claimed they would be accused of xenophobia if they arrested the suspect.

Eventually they agreed to arrest the man on charges of attempted robbery and being an undocumented immigrant.
