Five simple steps to prevent crime in 2017

Security practitioner's advice to residents.

To greatly reduce one’s chances of falling prey to crime this year, a few simple steps can be followed, said security practitioner Louis Grobler.

Grobler advises residents to adhere to the following five simple, yet effective, steps:

1. An attitude of ‘It won’t happen to me’ places you on a road to disaster and possible high cost, including severe personal injury and loss. A more sensible attitude of ‘I won’t let it happen to me’ is a much safer route to take.

2. Base your safety and security credo this year on the Five ‘B’ Rule: Be Aware, Be Alert, Be Prepared, Be Safe, Be Secure and Be Protected.

3. Make it a rule rather than an exception to check you security system with your security service provider at least once a month. Diarise it.

4. Most crime incidents emanate from perimeter fence breaches and no or inadequate provision for outdoor detection. Make these priorities.

5. Have the batteries in your security system checked and replaced if necessary, especially if older that one year. Weak battery power may result in signals not being transmitted to your security service provider, resulting in no help being summoned.
