How to stay awake on New Year’s Eve

Are you a heavy sleeper? There are various effective ways to stay awake until the arrival of the New Year.

If you are the exact opposite of a night owl, but don’t want to miss out on all the action, there is a way to stay awake for the big countdown.

Sarah Titus, an inspirational and motivational blogger offers a few tips on how to stay awake past midnight on New Years Eve:

1. Stay away from sugar that day

Even though sugar provides a little bit of energy, this is only for a short period of time. Staying away from sugar will prevent a giant ‘sugar crash’.

2. Get plenty of sleep beforehand

If you can, try to get as much sleep in as possible a week beforehand. Worst case scenario, you want to get a good sleep at least the night before the big party so that you are well rested and your body can handle staying up late.

3. Take a nap

If you are able to take a nap during the day or after work for a few hours before your party starts, even better. Even if you can’t sleep, just lying there will help your body rest.

4. Take exercise breaks

While exercising, your heart race increases. It’s highly unlikely you will want to sleep while doing this as the effect is just the opposite. Try to exercise in one to five minute portions, doing anything from jumping jacks to just simple stretching.

5. Coffee and caffeine

Drink coffee or any soda with a high caffeine content. If you rarely drink these drinks, you will be able stay awake for longer.

6. Consider your environment

You need to keep things as bright as possible. Don’t watch boring re-runs on the television, rather watch something exciting you haven’t seen before to keep your mind from getting bored and tired.

7. Pump up the volume

Listen to your favorite songs and music louder than you normally would. Be mindful of neighbours of course, but keep yourself excited and upbeat through the night.

8. Drink cold water

This will help keep your body awake. When your drink cold water, your body has to work harder at getting the water to room temperature to be able to process and absorb it. And, if you need a splash of cold water on your face, don’t hesitate.

9. Forget about the time

If you are looking at the clock a lot, it’ll make the night seem to drag on forever. Keep yourself so entertained that you don’t even want to look at it.

10. Get some fresh air

Cold or cool, crisp, fresh air will help you stay awake. Go for a quick walk in the backyard – use whatever excuse you need to get some air at your party – it will help you stay awake.
