Beat the Post Christmas Day Blues

Some suggestions on how to spend Boxing Day

Christmas Day has come and gone and you feel financially (and physically) drained and a few kilograms heavier.

Here are some suggestions to help you beat the post-Christmas Day blues after all the gifts have been unwrapped.

The best way to counterbalance all that heavy eating on Christmas Day is by going out and getting some fresh air. Pack a picnic basket with refreshing options like fruit, nuts and biltong, with iced tea (rather than soft drinks). The outdoor activities will help you recover from your Christmas hangover in no time. Places to visit include Emmarentia Dam and botanical gardens, Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Zoo Lake and Rhodes Park.

If you were smart, you would have saved a little cash to spend on Boxing Day. All the shops have their Big Christmas sales the day after Christmas and this is where you will snatch up all the bargains. Buy that thing your wife or husband did not get you for Christmas or that shirt you wanted for R1 000? It now costs only R400 and still looks as good as ever.

It’s easy to overeat over the Christmas period – to the point where you cannot remember the last time you actually felt hungry, not just peckish. To avoid the stuffed turkey feeling, go for a hike, jog, run or even a marathon to get your gut going again.

Boxing Day was traditionally a day devoted to servants and employees – employers would reward workers with a festive meal, gift or any other gesture to thank them for their hard work throughout the year. If you are in a senior position or have someone depending on you for an income, honour them for their devotion in this traditional way. You can send a traditional box filled with homemade goodies your employee’s whole family can enjoy, or sponsor them for a fun day out. You can even sponsor a nice meal at a fancy restaurant for them to enjoy.

Nothing says holiday like watching cricket. Spoil yourself by watching the Boxing Day match – either lazily from your living room couch, or by packing a picnic and enjoying it at the ground. This is the ultimate way to celebrate Boxing Day if you are a sport lover.
