Stay safe during the holidays

Emergency Management Services gives some safety tips for the festive season

The festive season is fast approaching, bringing with it the hustle and bustle of parties, shopping and entertainment.

This is unfortunately also the time of year people are more vulnerable and prone to accidents and therefore residents are urged to be more careful and vigilant.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) gives the following tips to ensure your festive season is safe and happy:

Fireworks safety:

– You should only buy fireworks from a reputable dealer.

– Instructions on fireworks should always be followed.

– Children should be supervised when around fireworks.

– Use protective eyewear.

– Only ignite fireworks outdoors.

– You should always have a bucket or garden hose handy when working with fireworks.

– Fireworks should be stored in a closed box.

Avoid the following when using fireworks:

– Do not light fireworks with a cigarette.

– Do not lengthen or shorten the fuse.

– Do not carry fireworks in your pocket or throw them while alight.

– Do not set off fireworks when under the influence of alcohol.

Pet safety when using fireworks:

– Keep your pets indoors while using fireworks.

– Never throw lit fireworks at your pets.

– Should you see an animal in distress contact the SPCA, Animals in Distress or the Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw).

It is important to familiarise yourself with the by-laws regarding fireworks before using them.

The other activity that happens a lot during holiday time is swimming. It is very important to know how to swim – it is an essential life skill. It is never too late to learn how to swim and it is the best way to stay safe around water.

Pool safety:

– Ensure there is a fence – with a locked gate – around your pool and cover your pool with a safety net.

– Learn to swim, and if necessary, arrange for your family to also learn how to swim.

– Children should never be left unsupervised around the pool.

– You should never swim when under the influence of alcohol, after a big meal or at night.
