Renewing your driver’s licence

Renewal process explained

Has your driver’s licence expired? Have you lost your licence card? Maybe it was stolen? Do you know what the renewal or replacement process entails?

It is important to remember that your South African driver’s licence card is the only valid proof of the fact that you have a driver’s licence. However, when the card expires, it does not mean that your licence has expired – it only means that your valid proof of such a licence is now out of date.

In the event of a lost or stolen licence card, the process to follow is exactly the same as for the renewal of a card that is about to expire or has already expired.

When applying at the appropriate Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC), you need to submit the following:
– Your identification document/ID book
– A certified copy of that ID (for filing purposes)
– Four ID photographs
– The card issue fee (R228)

After completing the application process, it can take up to six weeks for the new licence card to be delivered to the DLTC. The card will be sent to the centre where the application was submitted. In some cases, applicants may be required to apply for a temporary licence. This will allow them to drive until the new card is delivered.

If an applicant is aware that he or she will not be able to collect the card in person at the testing centre, the application must be accompanied by the following:
– The name and identification number of the person who will collect the card on the applicant’s behalf
– A certified copy of the identity document of the person who will collect the card
– An affidavit made by the applicant stating the reason why he or she will be unable to collect the card in person

Only the person whose details appear on the affidavit will be permitted to collect the card. That person will also be required to present his or her identity document upon collection of the card.

Should the applicant be unable to collect the card in person due to unforeseen circumstances, the person who is collecting it on the applicant’s behalf should submit the following:
– His or her identity document, and a certified copy thereof
– A certified copy of the identity document of the applicant
– An affidavit from the applicant, with an explanation of the unforeseen circumstances preventing him or her from collecting the card in person, as well as the name and identification number of the person who will collect the card.

Once these documents are received, the licence testing station will issue the card to the nominated person.
