National Play Monopoly Day

Play a game with your friends on #NationalPlayMonopolyDay

19 November is National Play Monopoly Day, a day dedicated to the world’s most popular board game, which has been played since 1935.

Before you sit down to monopolise all the utilities, railroads and real estate, take a moment to sit back and learn why the game was invented.

The original game concept for Monopoly was developed by Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips in 1903 to be used as an educational tool to illustrate the negative impact of concentrating land in single monopolies. The game’s original name was “The Landlord’s Game”. Several variations of the game with buying, selling and developing land as goal, were also produced.

The game of Monopoly, as we know it, was developed in 1933 and sold in 1935 by the Parker Brothers.

Here are some interesting fun facts about the game of Monopoly:
– The original game was based on the real city of Atlantic City in New Jersey.
– In 1988, the colour of the GO square was changed from red to black.
– The Free Parking Jackpot rule – where a player collects all the money from fines after landing on the Free Parking block – is a widely accepted house rule. The game rules state that the money from fines should be returned to the bank.

To celebrate, gather your family and friends and play a game of Monopoly.
