Dirty storm water drains cause concern

RUIMSIG – Resident has tried for six years to have storm water drains cleaned out.

A resident is very concerned about the state of the storm water drains along Peter Road (between Hendrik Potgieter and Van Dalen roads).
She is also concerned about the makeshift squatter camp right next to Hendrik Potgieter Road.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said for about six years she had tried to have the drains cleaned out and rubble removed.
She added that these drains were just some of the ones that are blocked and that she was almost certain that more drains in the city have the same problem. “I think that the entire city’s drains should be looked at and cleaned for the benefit of all road users,” she said.
Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) operations manager for marketing and communication, Bertha Peter-Scheepers, said illegal dumping could be attributed to this problem. “Illegal dumping of litter, leaves, mattresses and bicycles along with silt and other debris severely clog up the city’s storm water drainage systems,” said Scheepers.
She added that the clearing of the storm water inlets along Peter Road has been scheduled for this week.
Ward 97 councillor Leah Knott said she found that people tended to not log problems regarding storm water drains to JRA and encouraged residents to do so. She provided the Roodepoort Northsider with a pamphlet which stated that once a blocked storm water inlet was reported to JRA, the turn around time was usually 24 hours.
