Update: Faulty water meter causes R20 000 bill

WILGEHEUWEL - Residents are advised on how to take action when they receive abnormally high water bills.

To the relief of resident, Ken Brijder, the City has corrected his R20 000 water bill.
The City’s spokesperson, Kgamanyane Maphologela said the customer’s high water bill was caused by a faulty water meter.

“The query relating to the abnormal amount on the customer’s bill has long been normalised and resolved on the system, and the customer was given feedback,” said Maphologela. According to Maphologela, Brijder was further given a courtesy call and given updates on his account.
“Our technicians investigated the matter and it was found that the problem was related to a faulty water meter after the meter was tested. Going forward, the customer should receive an accurate bill as the account has been adjusted,” Maphologela added.
Brijder confirmed that he received notification of the correction in mid-October and was then given a new, correct water bill as of the first week of November.
Maphologela said that over and above customers monitoring their water consumption patterns regularly, they should also practice simple water-saving tips to reduce their water bill.
He adviseds residents to check for a possible underground leak if their municipal bill is abnormally high. Residents should also have their water meter tested and report it to the City.
