Darrel’s Lifetime membership

RCA chairman awarded lifetime membership

Darrel Phillips was recently granted a Life Membership of the Roodepoort Care of the Aged (RCA) board. He received the honour from the RCA Committee at a recent board meeting at Tornado Park. He has been chairman of the non-profit organisation for the past four years after joining in 2009.
Darrel has a long history in Roodepoort and is known for always lending a hand where help is needed. He was instrumental in raising funds to build the Florida Catholic Church, the convent and the Grotto behind the convent. He then became a member of the Catholic Order of the Squire of Da Gama and was elected the Third Chief Squire. Darrel went on many excursions such as travelling to Lesotho to visit the grave of Father Joseph Gerrand, Saint of the Afflicted. On a trip to Namibia, he spent time with the Herero, Damara and Ovahimba tribes. He took pictures and some were featured in a book titled Faces of the Namib.
With his best friend Peter Myburgh, Darrel joined the Order of the Freemasons where he remained a member for 35 years, becoming the District Grand Prior of Knights Templar in Southern Africa.
Darrel has been a hard-working resident of the West Rand, doing his best to uplift his community. He is currently the vice chairman of the Sector 2 Community Policing Forum and has received the Merit award from Rotary for his work in the community.

Some of his highlights with the RCA include assisting members with various electricity-related problems, risking the wrath of the Housing Department, and listening to the issues members experienced and trying to assist them.
