Be prepared and stay safe

Er24 urges all members of the public to take note of the following tips

Heavy rainfall and flash floods throughout the South of Johannesburg and the East Rand had ER24 responding to numerous incidents during the afternoon and evening of 9 November.

A flash flood is the rapid flooding of a low-lying area and may be caused by heavy rainfall associated with severe thunderstorms. A flash flood is different from an ordinary flood – it can happen in less than six hours. These deadly, sudden floods could happen at any time, without warning, and catch you unawares, putting your life in danger.

If you live in an area that is prone to flash floods you need to plan accordingly to ensure the safety and protection of your family and property.

Russell Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, urges all members of the public to take note of the following tips:

When you are at home during a flash flood, do the following:
– Keep important information and emergency numbers handy. You should also make sure you have emergency supplies, such as water, canned food, can opener, battery-operated radio, flashlight and protective clothing ready.
– Make sure you have a first aid kit.
– Turn all household electrical devices off.
– Make sure all windows are closed and doors are locked.
– Before it is too late, leave the area and move to higher ground.

If you are outdoors or in your vehicle, do the following:
– Climb to higher ground and remain there.
– Water that is 15 centimetres deep can sweep you of your feet, so don’t ever walk through floodwaters.
– Abandon your car and move to higher ground if you are surrounded by rising water that is not moving.
– Never attempt to drive through flood waters – you do not know how deep it is or if the road beneath has been washed away.
– Try to grab onto something to pull yourself back to safety if you are swept away by floodwaters.
– It can be extremely dangerous if you are swept away while inside your vehicle. Should this happen and you are stuck inside your vehicle, roll down the windows and open the doors. This will allow water into your vehicle, equalising the pressure on both sides of the door, allowing you to escape.

“By following these tips, you will be prepared in the event of a flash flood. Remember to call 084 124 for real help, real fast,” said Meiring.
