Police quell rumours of trapped zama-zamas

Investigated as far as Florida.

A rumour was spread regarding zama-zamas (illegal miners) being trapped underground. An alleged brother of the miners phoned Radio 702 yesterday, saying he was afraid to report it to the police.

The rumour reached Roodepoort Police, which have long been fighting the scourge of illegal mining, and a high-ranking officer along with a team of the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) launched an investigation. According to the police official they searched from Matholesville to as far as Florida, inspecting every shaft they knew of. He said they could not find any shaft where anyone could be trapped in underground.
Police recently closed shafts after issuing notices of intent to the zama-zamas at the entrance of all known shafts.
