Pyjamas for patients

FAIRLAND – Radford House Primary learners donate so patient's will have pyjamas.

Radford House Primary School supported the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital’s For Kids By Kids initiative with a Pyjama Day.
Michai’ah Simons, who attended the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital site dedication event and sat on Nelson Mandela’s lap in 2009, has now dedicated herself to help build the hospital.
With the assistance of her parents, Simons roped in her peers to get each child to donate to the hospital, which is set to open on 2 December. The children were urged to donate R10 and were allowed to dress up as doctors, patients or in their pyjamas on 3 November.
They donated R3 495.50 in total, which was handed over to For Kids By Kids on Pyjama Day. The money will go towards the hospital purchasing pyjamas for their patients.
For Kids By Kids public relations and communications manager, Lulu Herkt said, “The initiative started when a boy, Sam Harding, heard about the hospital and wanted to donate his savings. This made us think why can’t children be involved since the hospital is for them.
“Since then, children have been involved in giving to the hospital and we are really pleased schools have gotten involved.
“We do not want to only encourage children to donate but also educate the children about the hospital. We are glad for any school to get involved and challenge one another as every and any amount counts and can be used to build a better future for our children.”
This is not the first fundraiser Radford House Primary has held with Simons and they say it will not be the last. “Next year we hope to do this again and challenge other schools, as we think it is important to get our children involved in charity,” said the head of department for the junior phase, Yolanda van der Merwe.
Fairland Spar donated a sucker and a bag of chips to every child for their donations.
