Crime: Christmas ‘shopping’ spree has started

Residents urged to be extra vigilant.

In South Africa the festive season is synonymous with a drastic increase in criminal activity.

West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) spokesperson Frik van Zyl has confirmed this notion, saying, “The Christmas ‘shopping’ spree has started”. Van Zyl released some shocking statistics of crimes that were committed in the WSRNW‘s area this past week. Over and above an alarming number of failed attempts at a variety of crimes, the neighbourhood watch has recorded the following incidents:

• 7 housebreakings
• 1 business robbery
• 2 armed house robberies
• 3 motorcycle thefts
• 2 vehicle hijackings
• 1 assault

In a number of these incidents the suspects used either a red Hyundai or a black VW Polo.

Van Zyl has urged residents, not just in his area but in the whole of Roodepoort, to be extra vigilant and to report all suspicious activity.
