Win with Food Lover’s Market Tip of the Week

Another chance to win a R500 voucher

Fresh and flavourful beetroot is in season and available at Food Lover’s Market this week. This purple superfood has long been the villain in many kitchens as it so easily stains hands, clothing and surfaces. However, its many uses and robust taste far outweigh this inconvenience. Beetroot is delicious boiled and served cold, pickled or even roasted.

With its powerful nutrients and antioxidants, it’s also in any healthy juice or smoothie.

Charles Finlay, store manager at Food Lover’s Market Westgate shares a beetroot juice recipe and a tip on removing the beetroot stains.

Ingredients

½ piece of peeled ginger
2 celery sticks
1 small beetroot bulb
1 large apple
1–2 carrots
½ lemon or lime

Directions

Rinse all ingredients and them pat dry. Peel and cut the beetroot, carrots, celery sticks and the apple into long slices. Remove the apple core. Process all ingredients in a juicer, or by using the grating or pitcher mashing technique. Squeeze half a lemon into the prepared juice and stir well. Serve as desired.

Tip:

Should you stain your hands while preparing the beetroot juice, cover the stains with salt, wet your hands and gently rub together. The salt will exfoliate your skin and remove beetroot stains. Repeat if necessary and, once satisfied, rinse off the salt and wash your hands with liquid dish soap.
