Gun taken from officer in burglary

Police are on the hunt for two more suspects

Police are hard at work searching for suspects after a burglary at a house in Helderkruin.

The alarm went off and an Apcan Security officer who responded found three black males in the house. The officer tried to apprehend the suspects but he was overpowered, hit with a bottle and his gun was taken.

The suspects then fled and the Apcan security officer contacted the Roodekrans Blockwatch Watch on his radio for assistance. The Blockwatch, Apcan Security, DMS Security’s Ivan Shawe, Dowry Security and Roodepoort Police were swiftly on scene and started investigating.

Lieutenant-Colonel André Laing was also on scene and said the security officer who was injured is doing well.

“Two of the suspects were seen on Banket Street hiding behind a car and trying to gain entry to another house. The domestic worker saw them and quickly closed the door. The suspects then ran towards Wilgerood Road and the police helicopter was called to assist in the search,” he said.

One of the security officers then spotted a suspicious man, which led to Chironia Street being cordoned off. The suspect was hiding in a flower bed and had the gun that was taken from the Apcan officer. He was arrested and taken to be identified by the officer who responded to the burglary.

The police are still searching for the two suspects. It is unclear if they got away with any goods from the house.
