Grandfather assaults 10-year-old pupil at primary school

Serious questions being asked.

Serious questions about the security at Roodepoort Primary School are being asked after the grandfather of one pupil (boy B) assaulted another pupil (boy A) on the school grounds on Thursday, 27 October.

The day prior to the incident, the two boys were playing when, according to the father of boy A, boy A accidentally hit boy B with a cricket bat. The next day, just before classes started, at about 7.50am, the grandfather of boy B went onto the school premises and cornered boy A. The grandfather allegedly slapped boy A three times, kicked him and threw him against the wall before he managed to run away.

The parents of boy A now want to know why the grandfather was allowed, unaccompanied, onto the terrain.

A staff member, who wanted to stay anonymous because he/ she is not allowed to speak to the media, said the school does have stringent security measures in place and that parents and other adults are not allowed on the grounds unless they are accompanied by a security guard, and the only area they are allowed to be taken to is the reception.

The school denied knowing about the incident but the parents of boy A said this is a lie. The mother went to the school after the incident and reported it but the school allegedly told her to “put it behind her and move on”.

The Record could not reach the Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe, for comment.

The parents of boy A opened a case at the Roodepoort Police Station. The grandfather was arrested but released again on bail. The assaulted boy (boy A) is currently seeing a psychologist to deal with the incident.

(Since the children in question are both minors, neither they nor their parents can be named).
