Cansa raising awareness for pet cancer

Bark for Life fundraiser held at Florida Park High

The field at Florida Park High School was filled with furry friends and their humans on the morning of 29 October.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) held a Bark for Life relay event to raise funds for the Roodepoort SPCA and create awareness that cancer is not only a human disease – animals can get it too. “We did not quite get the turnout we were hoping for, but the people who were here knew what the event was about,” said Linda Steyn from Cansa. The event was a fundraising opportunity to benefit the Roodepoort SPCA as well as the different care units within Cansa. “Cansa is one of the organisations that do a lot of research about cancer and the related symptoms. Some of the money we receive from fundraisers such as this, go towards research as well,” said Linda.

One of the other sponsors for the day was Supreme Pet dog food. They donated bags of dog food to the winners on the day and also gave samples to the Roodepoort SPCA.

Nicole Manners, the fundraiser of Roodepoort SPCA was very grateful for the help from Cansa to raise money and awareness for the furry friends. “We would also like to thank Supreme Pet for donating dog food samples. We are very grateful for it and it will go a long way in helping our animals in the kennels,” she said.
