Police warn shoppers of a new fake money scam

KENSINGTON B – Randburg police warn residents of a new money scam involving a fake wad of cash.

Randburg police warn residents of a new scam they have discovered after a security guard from the Randburg CBD handed over a fake wad of cash.

Spokesperson, for the Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja explained that the security guard came to the station after discovering cash lying on the ground and immediately handed it over to police.

“The modus operandi used in this scam is that the scammers throw the fake wad of cash on the floor where an unsuspecting shopper will pick it up and that is when they accost the shopper by telling them that they also want a share of the money,” he said. He further explained that once the shopper and the scammer left to go and share the fake money, the scammer would then rob the shopper.

He described the roll of money and said that a fake note was rolled around paper and made to look like a wad of cash.

“As the Christmas season will soon be upon us, we urge residents to be alert when in the shopping centres as crime can happen anywhere,” Maja added.

Details: Randburg Police Station 011 449 9100.
