Meeting held for safety of domestic workers

PANORAMA - Meeting held for safety of domestic workers while at work.

Chairperson of the Panorama Residents Association, Jon Rosenberg held a domestic meeting on 25 October at the Panorama Primary School.

The aim of this meeting was to keep people safe while working at their homes. Rosenberg encouraged people to attend these meetings as they could mean a lot for personal safety. According to him, the meeting was not well attended, but he said it was due to people having issues with transport.

Beagle Watch Security spoke and once again encouraged people to test panic buttons, preferably every two weeks.

Rosenberg said it came out in previous meetings that domestic workers would prefer panic buttons in the bathrooms of their employers’ houses as well, as it could happen that they are locked in the bathroom during an attack. Rosenberg urged domestic workers not to open gates, even if people say they are there to do work.

He explained that criminals take mail from post boxes and then say at the gate they are there to see the owner of the house. “If they add the owner’s name, when introducing themselves, it makes it sound more legit. But please, tell your workers not to open the gate,” he said.

According to Rosenberg criminals are taking advantage of all the Telkom and Vumatel people working in the area.

According to him reflective jackets are not hard to come by at all. Criminals act as though they are from these companies. However, it is important for domestic workers to be vigilant and know that all contract workers must have an ID on the left side of their reflective jackets. If they do not have it, they must and can be reported.

Rosenberg said he still gets domestic workers who do not know their employers’ addresses or their contact details. It is important for them to know this information in case of an emergency.
