Adopting a furry kid is easy peasy

While you're walking through the kennels, the dogs bark excitedly, hoping you will notice them.

Adopting an animal from the Roodepoort SPCA is really very easy. The hardest part is choosing a dog or cat that will fit in with your household.

There are too many unwanted animals out there and therefore I opted to adopt when my daughter wanted her own fur-baby. The animals at the SPCA are all eager to be adopted. While you’re walking through the kennels, the dogs bark excitedly, hoping you will notice them.

The SPCA makes it even easier, by posting pictures of animals on their Facebook page.

Here is what you do: visit the SPCA and choose a dog and/ or cat. You then fill in a form giving them an indication of what your house looks like, such as fencing, shelter and access to food.

The form is given to the SPCA inspector who makes an appointment with you to do a home check. Your animals should have access to food and water during the day, and shelter, and it is imperative that dogs cannot escape from the yard.

As soon as your home check has been approved, the dog or cat will go for deworming, vaccination and sterilisation. The SPCA will then contact you to let you know that your animal is ready for his or her new forever home.

The dog we adopted recently is a Pomeranian and a stray. I think it is the first time in her life she’s experiencing love, human touch and her very own toy, which she adores. We called her Mitzi. She’s already part of the family.
