Watch: Water wastage in Witpoortjie

Residents are urged to save water and adhere to water restrictions, but what is happening here?

Trezona Avenue and Ham Street became rivers on the afternoon of 31 October.

In view of the recent water crisis in the City of Johannesburg and residents being urged to save water and adhere to level two restrictions or face consequences, the actions of Johannesburg Water (JW) could not be explained.

JW workers were repairing a leaking water pipe on Ham Street, when they realised the water pressure was too high. They then opened the valves at the fire hydrant points on the corner of Ham Street and Trezona Avenue, on Ham Street as well as on Generaal Pienaar Avenue to reduce the pressure. This resulted in a fountain of water spurting into the air and running down the streets in litres.

Residents and businesses were left without water and the Record’s offices were also affected. Some of the workers made a plan and took bins to harvest the water to be used for example to flush toilets.

JW was contacted for comment, but by the time this article was published, none has been received.

Should you notice similar water leaks, burst pipes, any form of vandalism or theft of water infrastructure, report it to JW on 0800 00 25 87.
