Update: More shocking allegations surface in baby kidnapping case

Mother of baby suffering from severe depression.

The good Samaritan who took up the plight of a Florida family whose one-day-old baby was kidnapped, has revealed more disturbing allegations about the Sophiatown Police’s inaction and non-existing investigation.

The woman, who wants to stay anonymous out of fear of being victimised by the police, said according to the father of the baby, Thulani Mncube, the police have not compiled identity kits of the kidnappers yet. They neither interviewed a security guard at Coronation Hospital who claimed he recognised one of the female kidnappers because she has been there before.

The police also never arranged trauma counselling for the 24-year-old mother, Thokozile, and the Samaritan had to do so yesterday. She said the mother is suffering from severe depression and is becoming physically ill.

Although they had told the investigating officer (IO) more than two weeks ago about CCTV footage at the Apple Bite Road House where the kidnappers pulled firearms on Thokozile and demanded she handed over her belongings and the baby, the IO only went to fetch it at the end of last week. By that time it had been erased, as it is the relevant security company’s policy to erase footage every two weeks.

The family also believes the kidnappers might have an insider at the hospital who feeds them information, since it is highly suspicious that they asked Thokozile for directions to Roodepoort. Thokozile lives in Florida. The father wants to know whether they knew beforehand that she lives there.

The Record did manage to reach the spokespersons of both the Sophiatown Police Station and the Provincial structure, and is awaiting comment.
