Update: Young biker in critical condition

He is in an induced coma and that the doctor is waiting to see if the nerves recover.

The 20-year-old Hendrik van den Berg, who was hit by a truck while riding his scooter yesterday, 25 October, is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Milpark Hospital.

His mother, Anna-Marie, posted on Facebook early this morning, saying he is in an induced coma and that the doctor is waiting to see if the nerves recover. If not his leg will have to be amputated. She appealed to the public for anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward and make a statement and asked that the person be willing to testify should the case go to court.

The accident took place at about 1.50pm at the intersection of Generaal Pienaar Avenue and Albertina Sisulu Road. Van den Berg’s scooter was dragged by the truck for more than 60m. He was treated on the scene by ER24 but was airlifted by a Netcare 911 helicopter.

The Record is currently awaiting comment from the Metro Police.
