National Pumpkin Day

Enjoy some delicious pumpkin on #NationalPumpkinDay

26 October is National Pumpkin Day – a day created especially for people with a love for pumpkin in all its various forms.

Today, people across the world are enjoying all the various delicious dishes made from pumpkin – including cakes, cookies, pies, puddings, coffees, smoothies, candies, breads, muffins, soups, cheesecakes, oatmeals, lasagnas and many more.

Pumpkin (squash) is native to North America. The oldest evidence found of pumpkin-type seeds was found in Mexico, and dated to somewhere between 7 000 and 5 500 BC. The word ‘pumpkin’ originates from the Greek word pepon – meaning ‘large melon’.

Veterinarians may recommend canned pumpkin as a dietary supplement for cats and dogs experiencing certain digestive ailments. Raw pumpkin is also fed to poultry during winter to supplement their regular feed. This helps to maintain egg production.

Pumpkins are also carved into Jack-o-Lanterns at Halloween.

To celebrate today, find some tasty recipes and make a delicious pumpkin dish. These dishes include pumpkin lasagna, savoury pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin pudding and pumpkin bars.
