Be careful at this corner

Why is there a storm-water pipe planted on the sidewalk? of Who planted a storm-water pipe on the sidewalk?

Motorists as well as pedestrians on Nywerheid Street in Roodepoort are urged to be careful.

In addition to the traffic light on the corner of Nywerheid and Einde Streets that often comes as a surprise to drivers who do not know the area, a storm-water pipe appears to be growing from a big hole in the sidewalk. On closer inspection, it was found that it is the broken piece of a pipe that runs underground. It is unclear what had caused the damage.

This is posing a danger to motorists and pedestrians alike. The hole in the sidewalk forces pedestrians to walk on the road, but with the added danger of being knocked over by vehicles coming around the blind corner. This road is prone to potholes and also not well lit, and motorists who are not aware of this huge hole close to the road surface might see it only when it is too late to prevent an accident.

Record journalist, Sonwabile Antonie is wondering what caused the damage.

This matter was brought to the attention of the Johannesburg Roads Agency, but no comment has been received by the time the article was published.
