Keeping our Senior Citizens safe

Keeping elders safe

Roodepoort Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit recently paid a visit to the Floroma Old Age Home in the Roodepoort CBD. The unit’s Constable Shumikazi Mbuli spoke to the senior citizens about their safety heading into the festive season.

“Knowing what to do when going to the ATM to draw money or to the shopping mall is vitally important.

Although we have not received reports about scams or robberies of senior citizens, we are taking preventative measures so that those crimes do not occur,” she said.

When going to the ATM, senior citizens and the community are advised to be vigilant of who is around them. When at the ATM, do not ask for any help unless it is from an official bank employee or security guard. To keep a bank account PIN number hidden when punching it into the ATM is also advised.

“This is to prevent others from seeing it. Another tip especially for senior citizens is to not to use earphones while out as this shows criminals they have a cellphone. And walking in pairs is one of the best deterrents for criminals instead of being alone and becoming a target,” added Mbuli.

The Social Crime Prevention Unit has been working closely with various senior citizen homes and will be part of the Fête that will be held at the Floroma Old Age Home on 5 November.
