Sisters excel with an abacus

Sisters Morui and Moruo Machaka participated in the annual Abacus Maths and Mental Arithmetic International Championship held in Singapore earlier this month. The event was hosted by GAJSMA (Global Association of Japanese Soroban and Mental Arithmetic).

The sisters, both pupils at the Kings School West Rand, were nominated to be among the 25 students from various regions of the country to represent South Africa at the annual competition. At this event, the sisters competed against children from 15 other countries such as Japan, Canada, Australia and Singapore. Morui and Moruo both excelled at the competition. Nine-year-old Moruo is now Champion in Level 8 and 11-year-old Morui came in second on Level 7, which is the highest level, and more complex than Level 8.

Morui and Moruo are the daughters of Pastors Chris and Mpho Machaka and have made their parents proud. “We’re very proud of the achievements of our daughters, and hope this story will inspire more parents to start investing in the development of their children’s mathematical competencies. The country is in need of these skills,” said Mpho.
