Reality meets creativity

RUIMSIG – Pupils of Maragon Ruimsig High School tackle difficult issues through art.

Maragon Ruimsig High School art pupils revealed their creativity by addressing sensitive issues in their final Grade 12 art exhibition.

Each matric pupil had to complete four artworks, two for the year’s theme of opportunity versus regret and the other two on their exam theme of migration. The pieces, which were exhibited on 19 October, revolved around topics which included colonialism, capitalism, violence, gender equality, life choices, identity, family, perceptions and love.

“Each pupil has been able to find their personal voice and create varied artwork which I think is important in a contemporary society,” said subject head of creative and visual arts, Nicky Hards.

Hards said that each pupil had a visual diary which showed how each original artwork was researched and planned. The exhibition counts for 50 per cent of their final mark and the other half is allocated to theory. A selection of artwork from the pupils’ previous years was also on display.

“It took hours of thinking, rethinking and going back to the drawing board. Then you could still receive a big ‘no’ from Miss Hards. I worked on an idea for weeks before it materialised into an artwork. I have now developed a passion for each piece,” said pupil, Awande Dube.
