When in an emergency, the worst thing would be not to know what you can do to help.
The City of Johannesburg set out a few straightforward steps to follow if you ever find yourself in such a situation:
- Give the physical address and nearest corner or landmark
- State the nature of the incident
- Try to remain calm
- Give your name and contact details
- Identify the emergency: motor accident, building fire, heart attack and so on
- First thing, contact the Control Centre on 10177 or 112, if you are phoning from a cellphone
- Indicate the number of people or vehicles involved
- Remain on the line as long as possible to answer the operator’s questions.
