Outdated election posters frustrate resident

STRUBENS VALLEY – A resident is determined to get rid of election posters along Cascades and Fredenharry roads.

In an attempt to clean up the community, resident John McIntyre, has reported outdated election posters still left on street poles since the municipal election in August.

McIntyre said there are many election posters still found along Cascades and Fredenharry roads, as well as side roads in Strubens Valley and into Little Falls. He said he was going to take them down himself but he knew that according to law, he was not allowed to.

“This has been a problem in the past. If other parties take down their posters, I don’t understand why these parties can’t either,” McIntyre said.

Ward 85 councillor, Carl Mann confirmed that residents cannot remove the posters themselves as they belong to the party. Posters need to be removed by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department. He added that election posters should have been taken down by the end of September and parties with posters still on street poles will be fined R200 per poster.

Metro police spokesperson, Superintendent Edna Mamonyane confirmed that they charge each political party on the number of posters left up, but they first issue a warning and give parties a period of time in which to get them down.
