Update: Police given another chance to respond to shocking videos

Cluster spokesperson asked for meeting.

After two videos of police members ill-treating the public at Roodepoort Police Station have surfaced in one week, the police are yet to comment or investigate.

On 5 October Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo was approached for comment, but she said she was in hospital and referred the Record to the Honeydew Cluster spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan. The video clip and a description of the event were sent to him via WhatsApp and though it was clear he had opened the messages, he never replied.

When the second video surfaced it was also sent to Muthan on 11 October. This time the messages were not opened.

The Record then sent a request to the Roodepoort Police Station commander Brigadier Kupiso as well as the Provincial spokesperson Colonel Kay Makhubela. The email read “Good day Brigadier, last week we posted a video of how your members treat the public at your station. Captain Khumalo said I must get comment from Captain Muthan of Cluster. He has yet to comment. (That was on 5 October. Although it is clear he read the WhatsApps, he did not acknowledge the request.)

“Here is a video we have published today. I again asked him to comment. But again heard nothing. Please watch this video. The officer calls the complainant’s mother “useless” and as he walks away says to the complainant “you’re f***ing useless”. This is the second video in a week and it seems the station’s reputation is not worth commenting on. I will ask Provincial for comment if you choose not to comment, and if they fail too, escalate it to the Minister of Police’s office.”

The Record called Muthan later the same day (11 October). According to Muthan he “was not at work” and therefore could not attend to the matter. It seemed he was unaware of the request that was sent this morning (11 October). He then requested that an urgent meeting be held at the Honeydew Police Station on 12 October.

The Record will keep its readers informed as to the outcome of the meeting.
