Be safe this summer

Welcome the summer responsibly

Summer’s here and we’re experiencing warmer weather – and many people plan to spend time at the pool or beach to say goodbye to the cold winter days.

Chitra Bodasing-Harduth, the spokesperson for ER24, urges people to be responsible in welcoming the warmer months, as drowning is a common occurrence.

The following 10 tips should be kept in mind to prevent drowning:

– Anyone – including those who can swim – is at risk of drowning. Avoid taking risks and being overconfident.

– If you plan to go swimming or are supervising other swimmers, refrain from drinking alcohol as it impairs movement and thinking.

– Children should never be allowed to swim or play near water without adult supervision.

– Pools should be covered with an approved pool net when not in use. A fence around the pool is also a good idea.

– Reckless behaviour and diving into a pool should be avoided as you could slip and fall into the water or injure yourself.

– When swimming in the ocean, never swim out too far as you could get swept away or struggle with fatigue. Only swim in designated areas.

– When participating in water sports, always wear a life-jacket.

– Never swim alone.

– If you do not know how to swim, make sure you learn.

– It is vital to learn first-aid and CPR – you never know when you might need that knowledge to save someone’s life.

Follow these tips, and ensure you have a happy and safe summer.
