What to do when you are being hijacked.

In light of recent hijacking alerts from the police, it is important that you remain alert and vigilant, so that you do not become the next victim.

Although there is no way of preventing a hijacking, there are ways to protect yourself.

The News spoke to the spokespersons from the Kagiso and the Krugersdorp Police, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya and Constable Tshepiso Mashale who gave us all the information you need to keep yourselves safe on the roads, as well a list of vehicles that are most likely to be hijacked on the West Rand.

Toyota Hilux bakkies and Corollas

Volkswagen Polos

Nissan cars

Isuzu bakkies

Hyundai cars

Any residential driveway

Things to remember when you are being hijacked or attacked:

Do:

– Everything the perpetrators tell you to do

– Try to remain cool and calm

– Avoid driving alone at night

– Report suspicious-looking people driving in groups of two or more vehicles

– Try to be orientated with your movements, directions, time and place

Do not:

– Become panic stricken or hysterical at any time

– Offer any form of resistance

– Become aggressive and lose your temper

– Enter into an argument with the perpetrator

– Park on pavements, open spaces and parks

– Sit in your stationary car at night
