Jailbirds raise bail for Cansa

RUIMSIG – Cansa Westrand put local business staff in 'jail' to raise funds for cancer patients.

Cansa Westrand Care Centre held a Jail and Bail Project where the staff of various stores in Cradlestone Mall were put in ‘jail’ until they raised enough money for bail.

With the help of the West Rand Flying Squad, mock summonses and mock arrests were handed out on 1 October. Stores, such as Food Lover’s Market, Westview Alcohol and Drug Rehab Clinic, Bargain Books and Ocean Basket volunteered for some of their staff to be locked up in the makeshift jail of palisade fencing to raise money for Cansa through their ‘bail’. The staff was accused of false crimes, such as bribing a police officer with a lollipop or being in possession of drugs.

Besides donations, shoppers could support Cansa through buying their merchandise on display or participating in their ‘shavathon’ or ‘sprayathon’ on the same day.

To grab the attention of shoppers and entertain onlookers, singer Candy Benson and Elzané van der Merwe, second place finalist on the Jacaranda Show Voice, sang throughout the event.

Community mobiliser, Linda Steyn said, “The project went well. A big thank you to Ocean Basket, Bargain Books, Food lover’s Market and Westview Clinic. They were a big help and really are making a change in people’s lives.”

Funds raised will go to Cansa’s integrated and patient care services.
