Shootout in Witpoortjie leaves one wounded

Two suspects still on the run.

One armed robber sustained a head wound during a shootout between him and a homeowner.

According to West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) the incident took place yesterday (2 October) at around 7.40pm. However, the exact details have not been confirmed yet, said their acting spokesperson Mathys van Rensburg.

A woman from Pretoria along with her brother were visiting their father’s home on Nantes Street in Witpoortjie. The three were watching television when three armed suspects broke open the gate. They tied up their victims but unbeknownst to them the father managed to free himself. They loaded all the valuables into the BMW belonging to the father (believed to be a high-ranking policeman) and the daughter’s Mini Cooper. Two of the suspects fled in the BMW but as the third suspect was starting the Mini Cooper the father allegedly came out armed and a shootout ensued. The suspect was hit in the head.

The family dog was also injured and taken to the veterinary clinic where it stayed overnight. It recovered enough to be sent home this morning.

The wounded suspect was taken to Leratong Hospital but it is uncertain whether he has survived.

The BMW was also recovered in Leratong but the other two suspects are still on the run.
