Win with Food Lover’s Market

Another chance to win a R500 voucher

Pears are a great source of fibre and contain minerals and vitamins that contribute to a healthy and balanced diet. While pears can be enjoyed as a fresh, healthy snack, it can also be preserved, used for baking and in salads. Charles Finlay, store manager at Food Lover’s Market Westgate, has given tips on the best ways to select and store pears.

When purchasing pears, select the firm ones but make sure they are not too hard. To get them to ripen quicker, place them in a brown-paper bag and store at room temperature. Make sure that the skin of a pear is smooth without bruises. Pears with dark or soft spots are ripe and cannot be kept too long, but could be stored in the refrigerator for a few days to keep them fresh. Always store them away from other foods with strong odours, as they tend to absorb the odours.
