Matthew opens Door of Hope

He collected 50 donations of R50 each from the community and was inundated with many wanting to lend a hand.

Matthew Winkworth is not like many other 11-year-old boys. He took it upon himself to become a shining hope in the community. The avid runner marked his 50th Florida park run by doing something positive that will have a lasting impact. Matthew wanted to raise funds for Door of Hope Children’s Missions, a non-profit organisation (NGO) that rescues and receives any abandoned, aborted, abused and orphaned babies and children from any source in cooperation with other agencies. Using his park run milestone, he collected 50 donations of R50 each from the community and was inundated with many wanting to lend a hand.

“I registered my cause on a website called givengain.com and the feedback I received from everyone. The site is a great platform to promote a cause,” he said.

Another reason Door of Hope is close to Matthew’s heart is that his younger sister, three-year-old Rebecca was adopted through the organisation.

“After I learned a bit more about the organisation, I wanted to help them as much as I could because they needed help. Earlier this month I took my friends to visit Hope Village where we assisted where we could. Now I want to help the NGO towards their planned Children’s Village where abandoned babies will live and be looked after by a house mother.

There will be six babies in each home because they want the children to thrive in a family environment,” he said.
