Illegal dumpers caught and punished

Truck impounded.

Four males were caught in the act last night (28 September) dumping building rubble at the corner of Corlett and Venus Avenues in Roodekrans.

At about 9.15pm Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) received a complaint about the illegal dumping and sent out an alert to its patrollers. A Dowry High Risk Reaction Unit officer also received the message and rushed to the scene. The men tried to flee but the security vehicle as well as vehicles of the RNW patrollers blocked their way.

A security vehicle as well as neighbourhood patrollers blocked the truck when the men tried to flee.

They demanded that the men load the rubble back onto the truck, which they did, but when the men were asked for their licences they became aggressive. The police and Metro Police were subsequently called.

The transgressors were fined R1 500 and their truck was impounded by the Metro Police. It will cost them a further R2 650 to have the truck released.

According to Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar the fines for illegal dumping are as follows:

• R500 for a small amount of rubbish

• R1 000 for a bakkie-load

• R2 650 for building rubble
