National Good Neighbour Day

Don't just hope for a good neighbour, BE one on #NationalGoodNeighbourDay

It is a blessing to have a good neighbour but it is an even greater blessing to be a good neighbour.

Celebrate and acknowledge the importance of good neighbours on 28 September, National Good Neighbour Day.The word ‘neighbour’ comes from the Old English word neahgebur, with neah meaning ‘near’ and gebur meaning ‘inhabitant’.

Good neighbours often become good friends who look out for each other. They are always prepared to lend a helping hand and give advice when asked.

Neighbours are there when we need to borrow something, pick up our mail when on holiday, watch our homes and sometimes our children and pets as well as many other things.

National Good Neighbour Day was created by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana in the early 1970s.

Proclamation 4601 was issued in 1978 by the United States President, Jimmy Carter, which read:

“As our Nation struggles to build friendship among peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. For most of us this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighbourhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family. I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organisations to observe such a day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

In 2003 National Good Neighbour Day was changed from the fourth Sunday in September to 28 September.

To celebrate today you can do the following:

? Be nice to your neighbour – at home or elsewhere.

? If you don’t know your neighbours well, maybe today is your chance to go to them and start a conversation.

? Bake some goodies and share them with your neighbours. Bring some to work for your work neighbours.

? Invite your neighbours to your home for a meal.
