Is it a real employee – or an imposter?

Don't fall victim to those pretending to be City Power employees.

Social media have been buzzing with photos and comments from residents regarding City Power employee impostors.

According to Yumna Sheik, City Power’s spokesperson they are aware of the concerns of the entity’s customers that they might fall victim to criminals if they allow people pretending to be City Power officials and meter readers access to their properties.

But, how do you identify a City Power official?

When on duty, all employees are required to wear the official City Power uniform and carry an identity (ID) card with them at all times.

All ID cards are colour-coded to identify the department the technician is from. For meter audits and maintenance, the colour on the card is turquoise.

This card will also display a photo of the technician attending to the specific task, with his/ her staff number and an expiry date.

A hologram of the City Power logo (a firefly) appears on the card as well. These technicians can also be identified by the City Power vehicle they use.

If you are still not sure whether to allow a technician access to your property, the official’s credentials can be verified by calling the City Power meter verification call centre on 011 490 7900/ 7911/ 7553.

“Meter reading is an integral part of the services City Power provides to their ratepayers in their areas of operation across Johannesburg.

Meter reading in areas where no smart meter is installed is critical to ensure that consumers who use conventional electricity meters are billed for actual consumption. To that end, City Power kindly requests you to grant its officials access for meter-reading purposes. Prepaid customers are exempt from this requirement. The power of households where City Power officials cannot access the meters may be disconnected,” Sheik said.
