Scouts celebrate 100 years

The celebration of 100 years of Scouting on the West Rand continued on 24 and 25 September, at Ridgevale Primary School in Roodekrans. Troops from all over Roodepoort, including the 1st Eagles, the Florida Lake Sea Scouts and the Protea Ridge Scouts were invited. The Scout troops had a pioneering competition in which wooden spars are lashed together with ropes tied with knots to create a structure. No nails were used to keep the structures intact. Pioneering can be used for constructing small items such as camp gadgets or larger structures such as bridges and towers.

In the pioneering competition, some of the scouts took inspiration from the ‘carnival’ theme and made a scale model of their structure before building it. Once the scouts were done with building their projects, adjudicators then walked around evaluating and scoring each of them. The real test came when a group of Cub Scouts was allowed five minutes on each structure. The scouts built projects such as the spider web, a balance beam beater, a balance beam, a weight tester, a giant foozeball table, a carousel, a set of monkey bars and a bridge swing.

The competition started at 9am and the scouts were done with their projects by 12 noon.
