Outrage sparked by pending name changes

Name changes for some Gauteng schools on the cards

The latest controversy surrounding school names has local parents up in arms.

In March this year Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education announced that Gauteng schools with names, emblems and mottos that are offensive, derogatory or which hail apartheid heroes have until the end of September to change them – or it will be changed for them. Many parents from local schools only received communication about this yesterday (26 September) and are expected to have chosen a new name by 28 September.

The Record is in the process of obtaining a list of the schools that are required to change their name, emblem and motto, but believes schools that might be affected include Gustav Preller Primary School, Jozua Naudé and Laerskool Dr Havinga.

The schools that might not be affected could include Hoërskool Roodepoort, Hoërskool Florida and Hoërskool Bastion.

This is a developing story and an update will follow as soon as more information becomes available.
