Be on the lookout: Dog-owner warning

HONEYDEW – Be on the lookout for plastic bags with possible poison in the area. Four instances in three months.

Over the past three months, a concerned resident of Honeydew has noticed something out of the ordinary while walking his dogs.

Kevin Buitendag noticed plastic packets outside of houses and plots in the Honeydew area and he strongly suspects that this could be poison. “In a short time, my wife and me came across four instances.”

Buitendag said they look the same. “There is always more than one plastic packet containing a porridge-like substance.” He added that one of the packets is usually broken open. “The houses that they are left outside of always have dogs guarding the premises.”

The roads that he noticed the packets on were, two along Piet Retief Road, one on During Road and one on Zefania Road.

Buitendag said they have made contact with the property owners who disposed of the packets, but where he was able to pick them up himself, he placed them in a disposable bag and threw them in the Pikitup rubble removal trucks.

Manager of the Roodepoort SPCA, Mandy Cattanach said that people should be aware of packages like these. “The poison would resemble a black poppy seed and would be visible in white pap,” she said. Cattanach added that if people see these packets they are urged to dispose of them immediately where animals can’t reach them.

Charl Langenhoven from GP Tactical said that dog poisoning has been noticed in Randpark Ridge and Weltevreden Park.

Police comment on this matter is being awaited.
