Euro the place to be

For a good cause

Soccer, cricket and netball enthusiasts now have a place to call home. Euro Sports Club, which caters to these three sporting codes, is based in Horison, at the Roodepoort Athletics Club’s courts. Friends can use the venue free of charge to play five-a-side soccer, or a game of netball or cricket. This venture is being led by 29-year-old Tebogo Sekoati from Witpoortjie and 28-year-old Chris Cilengi from Horizon View. The duo wants to bring a bit of Europe to Africa and make Euro Sports Club the sports hub of Roodepoort by housing such a variety of sporting codes under one roof.

“We have been working with school pupils who flood the courts during the school holidays, and have good clean fun. We’ve had tournaments supported by players and parents,” they said.

The sports club was launched in February this year by hosting a soccer tournament. The duo admit that times were tough then.

“We had to upgrade the courts to be safe to play on and eight teams signed up to compete. But the biggest challenge we faced was getting the courts ready and getting word out to the community that we are operational,” they said.

However, things have now improved and on any given day, the courts are filled with girls and boys competing in various sports. Earlier this year, the club held a night market to introduce themselves to the community.

“During weekends and school holidays we’re especially busy and that’s great. We envisioned a multicultural club and that’s what we have achieved. You can make friends here and have fun with like-minded people,” they said.

The ambitious duo are not content with just offering three sporting codes. They plan to introduce hockey once the upgrade of the courts is at an advanced stage.

“We don’t expect to make money from Euro. Instead we’ve been pouring money into it although we still need sponsors to assist us. We have been holding plenty of fundraisers such as a car wash,” they said.

Another plan in the pipeline is introducing night games but that idea is dependent on the flood-lights being operational.

Euro Sports Club will be hosting a soccer and netball tournament on 2 October to assist Champions for Change’s Spring Day.
